Construction contractor arrested for illegal dumping in southwest Miami-Dade
An investigation conducted by the Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management’s (DSWM) Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in southwest Miami-Dade County has resulted in the arrest of a construction contractor for illegally dumping construction and demolition debris in the public right-of-way.
“In Miami-Dade County, illegal dumping is a crime, and those caught can face arrest and other penalties," said DSWM Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD. “We take protection of our environment and communities very seriously.”
SIU investigators discovered a large quantity of construction and demolition debris unlawfully discarded near SW 152nd Street and SW 208th Avenue, an area that has been targeted for enhanced surveillance due to repeated dumping incidents.
While examining the debris, SIU investigators identified evidence that led to a suspect in the case and notified Miami-Dade Sherriff’s Office (MDSO). A joint interview conducted by SIU and MDSO with the suspect, a construction contractor, resulted in a full confession. The individual was subsequently arrested and charged with Commercial Illegal Dumping.
DSWM urges residents and businesses to properly dispose of construction and demolition materials and to report suspected illegal dumping by calling 311 or using the Miami-Dade County mobile app.
Illegal dumping can harm the environment and results in millions of dollars spent on enforcement and cleanup costs. DSWM reminds residents that illegal dumping is a crime in Miami-Dade County and is subject to fines, vehicle seizure, arrest and incarceration.
Miami-Dade residents who witness illegal dumping in progress should call 911. Never confront someone who is dumping. Instead, attempt to get the vehicle license plate number or a description of the vehicle used to commit the crime. If an instance of illegal dumping has already taken place, call 311.
Illegal dumping can also be reported using the MDC Solid Waste mobile application for Apple iPhone and Android smartphone users. It’s available for download free of charge in the iTunes and Google Play stores.
