The barcode-scanning application allows users to instantly determine whether an item is recyclable in Miami-Dade County.

By simply scanning a product's barcode, residents receive clear disposal guidance tailored to local recycling guidelines. The app also provides geo-located drop-off resources, searchable waste and recycling information, and personalized bin day reminders to improve the overall recycling experience. As part of this partnership, for every item scanned through the Scrapp app, a local clean-up organization will commit to removing one piece of litter from Biscayne Bay, directly connecting everyday recycling decisions to tangible environmental impact.

Miami-Dade County produces more than five million tons of waste each year. Currently, 36 percent or 1.8 million tons of material are recycled. However, approximately 39 percent of what enters the recycling stream is contaminated, highlighting the need for better guidance. The Scrapp app aims to reduce confusion, improve recycling accuracy, and support the County's Zero Waste Master Plan goals.

"Creating a cleaner, more sustainable Miami-Dade requires both innovation and community participation," says Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "The launch of the Scrapp app empowers our residents with the tools they need to recycle correctly, reduce contamination, and take meaningful action to protect our environment. Every scan represents a small action that contributes to a larger impact for our community."

Scrapp was selected as one of the winners of the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority's 2025 Public Innovation Challenge for Waste Diversion. The Boston-based company connects stakeholders across the recycling chain and refers to itself as the "QuickBooks for waste", guiding materials from disposal to their highest-value second life.

"The Scrapp pilot goes beyond simply telling residents what goes in the recycling bin," offers DSWM Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD. "This tool helps educate our community on how to recycle right, provides convenient bin day reminders to improve participation, and supports our broader Zero Waste goals. At the same time, we are reinforcing our commitment to being responsible environmental stewards by promoting recycling.
