Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins to Host “Jimmy Ryce Avenue” Street Naming Ceremony
Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins will host a street naming ceremony honoring the life and legacy of Samuel James “Jimmy” Ryce, whose tragic death in 1995 galvanized national efforts to strengthen protections for children and support families of missing children.
The Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners recently approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Cohen Higgins to co-designate a portion of Southwest 162nd Avenue, from Southwest 232nd Street to Southwest 240th Street, as “Jimmy Ryce Avenue.”
The ceremony will commemorate Jimmy’s lasting legacy and recognize the advocacy efforts that emerged in the wake of his case, ensuring that his memory and the community’s commitment to child safety are never forgotten.
MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES:
- Remarks from elected officials and community leaders
- Street sign unveiling
- Interviews and photo opportunities
“This designation ensures that Jimmy’s name, and the urgency of protecting our children, will always remain present in our community,” said Commissioner Cohen Higgins. “Jimmy’s story is heartbreaking, by naming this roadway in his honor, we reaffirm our commitment to vigilance, advocacy, and the safety of every child in Miami-Dade County.”
Commissioner Cohen Higgins thanks her colleagues on the Board of County Commissioners for their unanimous support of the resolution.
