I am proud to announce the launch of SafeSummers 2026, our initiative that directly addresses the need for affordable full-time summer programming during the summer months. SafeSummers was originally created in the summer of 2021 to combat the rise in violence in South Dade by providing safe, fun, and productive alternatives for our District 8 children and teens.
With the success of last year’s program, we were able to support over 400 children with the help of our incredible Community-Based Organizations. We are thrilled to announce that: SafeSummers Grants are available for organizations to expand existing programs and launch new innovative opportunities for District 8 youth. The application period for grants for organizations is April 27, 2026 - May 8, 2026.
Eligible organizations must be registered 501(c)3s and can receive sponsorship to pay for fees for full-time, all-summer long programs serving youth in need who reside in District 8 (
see map). These programs and camps may include but are not limited to, sports, technology, leadership development, civic engagement, robotics, and the arts.
When children of working families are put at a disadvantage by not being able to participate in summer programs, the whole community pays a price. Through SafeSummers, we hope to help more youth in South Dade make the most of their summer while staying safe.
