Chairman Anthony Rodriguez Secures Passage of Measures to Accelerate Affordable Housing Development
Chairman Anthony Rodriguez secured passage of two measures designed to strengthen accountability and accelerate the development of affordable housing projects on County-owned property.
The legislation includes an ordinance amending the County's Infill Housing Initiative Program to limit the number and duration of extensions that may be granted to developers, as well as a companion resolution establishing Board policy to apply similar standards to other County-owned properties conveyed or leased for affordable housing development. Together, the measures are intended to ensure public land designated for housing is developed in a timely manner and does not remain vacant while housing needs continue to grow throughout Miami-Dade County.
"County-owned property intended for affordable housing should not sit vacant year after year while families struggle to find housing they can afford," said Chairman Rodriguez. "These measures establish clear expectations and accountability to ensure developers either move projects forward or return the property so it can be put to its intended use."
The ordinance limits extension requests within the Infill Housing Initiative Program, while the resolution establishes Board policy limiting extensions on other affordable housing developments involving County-owned property. The resolution also directs the County Mayor to take the necessary steps to enforce provisions that allow the County to reclaim properties or terminate leases when developers fail to meet their obligations."
"Public land is one of the most valuable tools we have to expand affordable housing opportunities," Chairman Rodriguez added. "These actions ensure County assets are being utilized effectively and that affordable housing projects move from concept to construction without unnecessary delays."
The measures are part of Chairman Rodriguez's ongoing efforts to increase accountability in government, maximize the use of public resources, and create more housing opportunities for Miami-Dade residents.
