Statement from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava following NTSB briefing at Miami International Airport
Our hearts remain with the families of those who died in Sunday’s cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, and with those who were injured and everyone affected by this tragedy.
Since the crash, I have been in close contact with our federal partners, including speaking directly with National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy ahead of her briefing at MIA which I attended with my leadership team. She emphasized that their goal is safety and described the work ahead, thanking us for our support and cooperation as they seek the cause of the crash and identify recommendations for the future.
I remain deeply grateful to our Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams, who responded to the scene in less than 30 seconds to extinguish the fire and care for the injured. The Aviation staff have excelled in their handling of both the crash and airport operations, including assistance to stranded passengers. These outstanding professionals have demonstrated the readiness and compassion we expect and the public deserves.
The investigation is just beginning, and we will let the facts lead the way. We will continue working closely with the NTSB and FAA throughout this process and evaluate any safety recommendations that come from their review. It is my foremost responsibility as Mayor to ensure the safety and well-being of those who travel through MIA and the residents of Miami-Dade County.
Two of MIA’s four runways remain closed as investigators continue their work, which will impact flights. Passengers should check directly with their airlines for flight updates before heading to the airport. Our teams are working with the FAA and our airline partners to minimize disruptions and restore full operations as soon as possible.
