Miami-Dade Solid Waste Management Hosts “Let’s Trash Cancer” Community Cleanup
The Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) partnered with local nonprofit Pick Up For Cancer, Inc. on Saturday, October 31, to host the “Let’s Trash Cancer” Community Cleanup, bringing volunteers together to beautify neighborhoods while helping to raise funds for pediatric cancer research through recycled cans.
“Protecting our environment and caring for our neighbors go hand in hand,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “This partnership shows how coming together to create cleaner neighborhoods and promote recycling can also bring hope and support to children and families facing cancer.”
Held in Commission District 1, the cleanup took place along NW 25th Avenue, between NW 170th Terrace and NW 173rd Terrace, where volunteers collected litter and recyclable materials, including aluminum cans and other metals. Proceeds from recycled cans collected through Pick Up For Cancer's fundraising efforts help support pediatric cancer research.
“When residents come together for a shared purpose, we strengthen our neighborhoods and the bonds that connect us,” said District 1 Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert, III. “I'm proud to support an initiative that encourages community service while making a difference for families who have children battling cancer.”
“Every item recycled and piece of litter removed is a step toward a cleaner, more sustainable Miami-Dade,” said DSWM Director Aneisha Daniel, Ph.D. “Partnering with Pick Up For Cancer allows us to advance our environmental mission while supporting a cause that extends far beyond the cleanup itself.”
Pick Up For Cancer, Inc. combines community cleanups and recycling initiatives with charitable fundraising to support individuals affected by cancer. The “Let's Trash Cancer” Community Cleanup highlights how environmental responsibility and community compassion can work together to create lasting, positive change.
