Alternatives to pet surrender

Faced with having to leave your pet at a shelter can be heartbreaking, but there are alternatives. We will work with you to find resources and solutions that can keep you and your pet together. We also offer rehoming assistance to help you find the best home for your beloved pet and keep them from having to enter the stressful shelter environment. Surrendering your pet to an open admission shelter should be your last resort.

  • Pet Retention Program

The Pet Retention program can help provide you with the resources to help overcome the barriers to keeping your pet.

Animal Services staff will work with you to help prevent you from surrendering your pets, while helping to ease the stray population and space at the Pet Adoption and Protection Center.

In the email, please include the following information:

    • Pet owner's name
    • Pet owner's phone number
    • Pet owner's email
    • Pet name, dog or cat, and age
  • Pet Deferment Program

The Pet Deferment program offers options to help you rehome your pet and avoid having to relinquish your dog or cat at the shelter. In some cases, we administer free DHPP and Bordetella vaccines and owners are asked to hold on to their pets for one to two weeks, after which time the owner comes back to the shelter and surrenders their pet if a solution to keeping or rehoming the pet has not been reached.

Animal Services staff works with pet owners on a case-by-case basis to provide this service. For more information, email us or call 311.
