The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department offers a one-year, ACGME-accredited, Forensic Pathology Training Program for medical doctors who have completed a residency in anatomic or anatomic and clinical pathology. Please see requirements below. Board-certified pathologists and a staff of toxicologists, investigators, technicians, and forensic photographers provide guidance in principles of forensic case solving to four Fellows. Neuropathology, Forensic Anthropology, Cardiac Pathology and Forensic Odontology consultants, and medical school staff regularly interact with the Fellows. Human skeletal remains cases provide study between visits by the consultant anthropologist. The police crime laboratory and firearms range provide additional training. The Fellowship year starts with two weeks of orientation and didactic lectures, followed by a time of graduated responsibility in case solving. Investigative strength is gained by primary responsibility for scene investigations, which average 35 per year per Fellow, the performance of approximately 200 autopsies, and presentation of cases at the daily case review conferences. Attending scenes is a requirement. Fellows must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive themselves to scenes throughout Miami-Dade County. Vehicles are provided. Fellows may have an opportunity to testify on their cases in court or in deposition by year's end. Five decades of categorized records provide excellent study materials for research and Board preparation in conjunction with a complete reference library and online services. Our fellowship is intentionally rigorous and demanding, designed to challenge trainees as they “run the service” in a manner similar to advanced medical rotations. Those who complete our program consistently describe it as difficult yet profoundly rewarding. By the end of the year, fellows graduate ready to practice confidently in any state and in any forensic pathology environment, including medical examiner and coroner systems. Requirements <ul> <li>Successful completion of an <a href="https://www.acgme.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education</a> (ACGME) accredited (or equivalent) anatomic pathology or anatomic and clinical pathology residency program.</li> <li>Successful completion of <a href="https://www.usmle.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">United States Medical Licensing Examination</a> (USMLE) steps 1, 2 and 3 or <a href="https://www.nbome.org/exams-assessments/comlex-usa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination</a> (COMLEX) Levels 1, 2 and 3.</li> <li>Be a United States citizen or have a valid permanent resident/resident alien card.</li> </ul> Stipend: $120,000 per year plus governmental fringe benefits.

Through the use of <a href="/global/medicalexaminer/pathology.page">forensic pathology</a> we combine the efforts of legal and law enforcement investigations with those of medicine and science to ascertain the facts surrounding deaths, particularly the cause and manner of death. On a daily basis we provide personal services to bereaved next-of-kin who call and visit us seeking help. Each decedent draws an investigating police agency as a consequence of the jurisdiction in which the death occurs, and each decedent will be followed by family members. We provide low-cost disposition for abandoned, unclaimed human remains and for deceased members of indigent Miami-Dade County families.
