Miami-Dade County's high school internship program gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore career opportunities in a wide variety of County occupations while receiving professional guidance and mentorship.
Eligibility requirements
Students must be either a junior or senior in high school (must be 16 years of age) and have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher. The student must obtain permission from their school counselor to participate in the program. Upon approval, the Miami-Dade County Pubic School (M-DCPS) coordinator submits a list of eligible students and resumes to the Human Resources Specialist to match with departments. Placements are based upon interest and available transportation (students are responsible for their own transportation).
High School Internship Program
As an intern with Miami-Dade County, high school students will receive a unique career-related experience. Interns will participate in activities that may include presentations, research projects, program design and everyday shadowing of professionals.
All high school internships are non-paid and for high school credit. High school internships are afternoon programs. Interns work for a maximum of five hours per week for 1 credit, and ten hours per week for 2 credits on a pre-set schedule arranged by the M-DCPS coordinator and based on the student's class schedule.
Specific project requirements will be provided to the department, if applicable. The Human Resources Department will provide quarterly evaluation (every 9 weeks), at the end of each grading period to the departments in which the students are matched up with.

The five week program (150 hours required) tentatively begins summer, June through July.
Eligibility requirements
Students must be rising 10th through 12th grade high school students between the ages of 16-18 years old. Priority will be given to at-risk students who meet one of the following criteria: Free/Reduced Lunch or English Language Learners (ELL) or Truant (15 or more unexcused absences).
The Summer Youth Internship Program experience
The goal of the program is to educate and familiarize students with Miami-Dade County government and the varying services we provide to our residents, visitors and the community at large. Through this hands-on experience in the workplace, students will recognize the knowledge, skills and abilities required to run a governmental entity.
A workplace supervisor from Miami-Dade County will evaluate the intern twice during the internship and an M-DCPS teacher supervisor will be assigned to the intern and communicate twice with the workplace supervisor and intern.
