Dedicated to serving his community

Metrobus supervisor Jose Antonio Aguiar - “Tony” as his colleagues and customers know him – shows a strong commitment to always go above and beyond for the community every day on the job. A 28-year County veteran, Tony starts his workday at 5 a.m. He is assigned to the Metrobus stop at the Stephen P. Clark Center (SPCC) in Downtown Miami. This bus terminal is a major transportation hub for nine bus routes that connect thousands of Miami-Dade Transit riders to their jobs and families.

Tony loves his job, and he enjoys interacting with people at the SPCC bus stop. With a smile and a great disposition, he answers questions about arrival and departure times, routes, directions to nearby locations, and anything in between for transit riders. He also helps bus operators and sometimes, like an orchestra conductor, directs traffic to make sure all buses arrive safely to their designated stop at this buzzing transportation center.

Tony has delivered small acts of kindness for thousands of Metrobus passengers and after working 22 years at the SPCC for the Department of Transportation and Public Works, many passengers have gotten to know him well. Others who have simply passed through have gone back to thank him for his help.

Tony speaks proudly when he tells the story of a group of tourists from Argentina who made time during their second visit to Miami to go see him and thank him. “I was touched to see that they took time out of their short visit to Miami to come back and see how I was doing and thank me for helping them a year earlier. Their kind words were a nice reminder that how I do my job and what I do for our customers really matters.”

Many passengers who see him routinely have also shared their appreciation for his devotion and enthusiasm. Tony’s colleagues and supervisors speak very highly of him. He has been honored by the Miami-Dade County Hispanic Transit Society, received a Quality Service Award from the department as well as numerous Employee of the Quarter accolades.

Providing excellent service is at the forefront of Tony’s mind when he arrives for duty. He says it’s the dedication to serve his community that motivates him as a County employee.
