In recognition of their efforts to protect Miami-Dade County residents during the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) was inducted into the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Hall of Honor as Essential Workers of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Assistant Director of Collection Operations Sherra Durham-Camp and Waste Truck Driver William Bouie attended the induction ceremony in Washington, D.C. early September to represent the department. DSWM employees were celebrated for delivering uninterrupted waste services during a demanding time at the national, state and local level. Sherra and William are featured in the DOL’s video which highlights the compelling stories of essential workers and their efforts during the pandemic.

“On behalf of Miami-Dade County, we are honored that our solid waste workers were recognized for their excellent work and vital service to our community,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “They represent all our County employees who worked tirelessly during the pandemic to serve our residents during such a challenging time.”

“I’m very proud of Sherra and William, not only for this honor on behalf of Solid Waste Management, but for their hard work and dedication every day,” said DSWM Director Mike Fernandez. “I’m equally proud of all our employees and contractors, all of whom worked hard during the pandemic to ensure waste and recycling were collected and managed properly in our community.”

Thank you to both Sherra and William for representing all the employees of the Solid Waste Department who exhibited incredible dedication during an unprecedented time.

The Hall of Honor event was live-streamed and can be viewed online on the DOL’s YouTube channel.
