Meet Joseph Esquilin, winner of the 2024 Bus Roadeo. Hundreds of Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) employees, family members and guests attended the event at Zoo Miami on Feb. 17, 2024 to see 24 operators go head-to-head during an intense two-day competition.

Operators drove through an obstacle course using bus maneuvers they use during normal bus operations. Once the dust settled, operator Joseph Esquilin came out on top, winning the overall bus competition. Operators Kerry Brinson and Michael Randoph took second and third place respectively.

“This beloved annual competition demonstrates DTPW's drive to operate with discipline and safety,” said DTPW director Eulois Cleckley. “Excited to see our top winners advance to the Florida Triple Crown Roadeo in Jacksonville in April.”

Esquilin has been a bus operator since 2007 and has received many passenger commendations. He was also July 2017's Employee of the Month. An experienced competitor, Esquilin is a five-time Local Bus Roadeo champion and has competed in the State Bus Roadeo many times.

The top winners among the 13 fierce competitors in the Bus Roadeo Maintenance Challenge this year were Willie Albizu in first place, Steven Darius in second place and Noe Almeida in third place. The winners for the individual maintenance categories were Noe Almeida, Steven Darius, Willie Albizu, Mario Sanchez and Yader Vargas. They also advance to the state competition in April 2024.

“Congratulations to all the participants. You made us all extremely proud,” director Cleckley concluded.
