On the road to success

Chrissy Marshall

“I appreciate you.” Those three simple words summarized recent sentiments from a Metrobus passenger about Miami-Dade County’s Bus Operator Chrissy Marshall.

“I’m sharing my sentiments of an unforgettable experience which has turned my trauma into post-traumatic growth,” said Sheneka Lawrence. Sheneka suffered a serious traffic accident earlier this year that has prevented her from getting behind the wheel again. She has found comfort taking Chrissy’s bus to work early in the morning. “Her warm smile, calm demeanor and cheerful personality have allowed me the opportunity to enjoy my commute to work again. Riding with her has become somewhat therapeutic,” said Sheneka, “Thank you for making me feel safe on my journey to work!”

Sheneka’s words have resonated with Chrissy. Those who know her well are not surprised. That’s because she thrives with excellence as a woman and Metrobus professional.

Marshall started her County career as a part-time bus operator in 2013. Two years later, she was promoted to full-time operator and has received several accolades for safe driving during her tenure with the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW).

Marshall drives one of DTPW’s brand-new emissions-free buses on the reinstated route 39, which runs on the South Dade TransitWay from the South Dade Government Center to the Dadeland South Metrorail Station. She starts her workday at 5 a.m. and enjoys greeting her passengers, including her regulars, with a fresh morning smile. She knows that it makes a big difference for many in their daily routine since she’s probably one of the first people who they interact with outside of home.

Chrissy shared that her first love has always been a deep-rooted passion for cars since she grew up around four-wheel machines because of her dad’s lifework as a mechanic. With a proud smile she added, “In fact, I love mechanical innovation and the automotive world so much that I bought a Tesla. Electric cars drive so smoothly and are far better. Just like my bus.” Her father is her inspiration. “His memory is in my heart. He’s the main reason I strive to show up and do my very best,” she shared.

Chrissy also expressed her gratitude for her supervisors and mentors along the way. Her goal is to become a Metrobus supervisor or instructor to help others achieve their dream.

“I’m grateful to do what I love in a career that has opened many doors for me,” Marshall concluded. Marshall recommends anyone who has what it takes to become a Metrobus operator to sign up.
