A lifetime of service

Althea Wedderburn

Service is a family tradition for Althea Wedderburn. She describes it as a passion ingrained in her career path.

Wedderburn started on that path with the Government of Jamaica in the Ministry of Finance. She joined Miami-Dade County more than 30 years ago and has a legacy of incredible volunteer work with the community to add to years of experience with the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW).

An administrative officer 3 in the Assistant Director's Office for Rail Services, Wedderburn is described as a stickler for details. The staff in all different areas of the division depend on her expertise and support. They appreciate her ability to get things done and keep them on schedule.

"It is very interesting to work here at Transit," Wedderburn said. "I'm involved with budgeting, fiscal, engineering and maintenance reporting, even employee recognition. Every day, there is something new and challenging to be involved with."

When Wedderburn says she likes to serve, she does not limit herself. For more than 10 years, she has prepared tax returns for low-income residents in the City of Miramar with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

She also takes great pride in her work with the American Cancer Society and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) initiative. Serving under Transit's banner "Team TOOT" or "Totally On Our Tracks," Wedderburn has helped raise more than $46,000. She has been recognized with several awards as a Pacesetter and Team Leader.

Possibly what makes Wedderburn so generous and giving of her knowledge and time is that she is a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Very proud of her family, Wedderburn describes the many accomplishments of her two grown sons and her incomparable 5-year-old grandson, Kane. She also sings in her church choir.

Having visited many countries and locations around the world, Wedderburn also has a passion for learning about other cultures.

"It is exciting to see new places and people. These experiences broaden your understanding of others and make working in service to the community even richer," she added.
