Dedicated duo adds value to Miami-Dade Police Department

Dorothy Dorsett and James E. Dixon
Life experiences are so important. They shape the way you think and see the world.

Dorothy Dorsett, for example, had a wonderful experience that changed her career trajectory. Her friendship with a police officer working off duty led to her making a career change. After 25 years in banking and finance, she decided to become a police officer herself. She joined the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) in 1992 and worked her way to Sergeant. For more than 20 years she completed assignments in General Investigations, Public Corruption and Internal Affairs. After retiring for a while, she is back as a member of the Personnel Bureau.

James E. Dixon grew up in Liberty City and was arrested and wrongly accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Completely exonerated, the experience changed him forever. He channeled his energy to help bring about change and improve the relationship of the community with police and government. He started his career in Corrections and came to MDPD in 1995, after three and a half years there. His work in the community impacted lives because he never wanted someone to go through the same experience of being wrongly accused and arrested. After serving in Carol City, Miami Gardens and Intracoastal areas, Dixon retired. Now, he is back in the Personnel Bureau partnering with Dorsett. As it happens, they worked together as officers a few times during their careers.

This dynamic duo, now conducts background checks on police department applicants. Their investigations include applicant work history, education and social media activity. Their work ensures new hires meet the highest standards and are a good fit for MDPD.

“This work is very rewarding," Dixon said. "Our investigations are integral to the success of new hires. As a former police officer, I have the background to be able to work through the information and assist applicants with understanding the process and why it is so important to be thorough and detailed. Not too early to start good learning about good police work either.”

“I enjoy working with the applicants and making sure the information gathered is complete and correct,” Dorsett said. “I also enjoy staying current and using the latest tech. There is always something new and meeting the applicants and watching them complete the requirements to join the MDPD provides a sense of accomplishment. We are assuring the future of our organization with these new hires. I think we are making our community stronger.”

With their unique perspectives and passion for service, both Dorsett and Dixon make a difference in the Personnel Bureau now. They bring their years of experience to help new generations of police officers. They also bring a bright smile and a sense of pride to their assignment. It’s a winning and welcoming attitude that brightens each and every day.
