The art of storytelling

Shenita Greaves

Storytelling is an art form. Youth Services Specialist Shenita Greaves has practiced this art with the Miami-Dade Public Library System for over 40 years.

"I think it's well recognized and largely undisputed throughout the department that Shenita is our preeminent storyteller," said Library Director Ray Baker. "For 40 years, she's brought a sense of wonder and joy to her work that's made her a favorite among our patrons, especially our children, and also loved by her colleagues."

Greaves, who currently serves at the Opa-Locka Branch, has worked at various branches throughout her career with the Library and developed her incredible storytelling skills while at the Little River Branch.

Her personality and lively talent for bringing characters to life from the pages of favorite books have made her welcome all over the County, including at schools, churches and special events. She connects children with available library resources and demonstrates an ability to ignite a passion for reading and learning in many children.

WLRN reporter Nadege Green was a child she inspired. Green shared a story during National Library Week in 2019 about Ms. Greaves being her unsung hero and how she always made her feel safe. Time spent with her created special memories.

Greaves has also been an integral member of the library's storytelling committees, including the "Juba This Juba That" committee and the library system's current storytelling troupe. She's participated in several library programs and events, including Hispanic Heritage Black History and Haitian Heritage Month events. She is undoubtedly an inspiration to fellow storytellers learning the craft.

A published author, her book "Raptown USA Rappers" tells a story with animal characters to show that you are never too old to achieve your dreams and that a good book will always keep you out of trouble. She has a new book due for release soon called "Christmas Eve at Grandmama's House," an enchanting tale that includes lots of holiday cheer and Santa moments with a group of young girls and their grandma.

One of Ms. Greaves' daughters, Kourt'ne, has followed in her footsteps and currently serves as a Youth Services Specialist at the North Central Branch Library, telling stories and supporting young people at our libraries.

"It has been a great job for these 40 years, and I want to keep going and serving the community," added Greaves. "I want to encourage others and firmly believe that the family that reads together succeeds together."
