Serving people with special needs

Gisel Prado

Over 21 years ago, Gisel Prado picked up a pamphlet as a student at Florida International University and knew therapeutic recreation would be her way to give back. Now, as a therapeutic recreation and inclusion manager with Miami-Dade Parks Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS), Gisel is responsible for a variety of creative programming that serves people with disabilities ages 6 to 22 in our community.

What started with one after school camp at Southridge Park has blossomed into more, including summer camps.

“My passion is working with children and individuals with special needs and helping them become more independent,” Gisel said. “Sharing with them the beauty of our parks and modifying and adapting activities and sports so they can participate and enjoy their time is important and rewarding work.”

“I love my job and feel incredibly fortunate that PROS has always been an environment where innovation and creativity is fostered and supported, Gisel said. “The leadership is always open and asks 'What do you need to make this happen?'"

Over the years, programs for those with special needs have flourished. The National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized PROS' extensive outreach efforts and acknowledged them as a model of equity in governance.

“I am so proud of Gisel and the Miami-Dade Parks’ Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion program team who serve as a national model of equity in governance as designated by the National Association of Counties,” said Miami-Dade Parks Director Maria I. Nardi. “Under Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s leadership, Miami-Dade County Parks provides outstanding park and recreation programs, connecting people across a range of abilities, ages, and backgrounds to health, happiness, and opportunities for prosperity. Gisel is an exemplary park professional committed to delivering excellence every day, building a healthier community and environment for all.”

“Our programs allow community members to engage and grow at our Parks,” Gisel said. “I have so many kids who are now young adults and have stayed active with our different offerings.”

"We offer a variety of activities during afterschool and seasonal camps that include tennis, arts and crafts, swimming. There's kayaking, basketball, baseball and field trips too. Everything is made possible with adaptations and the work of our dedicated staff.”

“Being outdoors in the fresh air brings families together,” Gisel added. “That’s what I teach my own son too.”

“I am fortunate to have such a cool job, doing what I love, she added. “Helping others and watching them smile as they do something fun for the first time is just incredible. It’s so energizing and transfers to everyone involved.”
