Bike Sue inspires health through cycling

Sue Kawalerski learned how to ride a bike at a young age and became an avid endurance cyclist around the age of 18. So, it’s no wonder she is thriving as Bike305 Manager at Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS).

"Cycling has always been a big part of my life," Sue said. "I have enjoyed the benefits of this continuous exercise and recreational regimen for decades."

"In my job, I get to teach and encourage residents of all ages how to ride a bike and see cycling as a lifelong healthy activity. It makes me happy when I see those kids and adults grow up and grow stronger and make cycling a part of their lives."

March is Bike305 Month in Miami-Dade County. It is also Bike Month in the state of Florida.

During her 10 years of employment at PROS, Sue brings the joy of cycling to all 34 of the County's municipalities by training staff who teach residents cycling safety practices, organize community bike rides, give away free bicycle helmets and more.

"Passion for people and connecting communities is Sue's trademark...on a bike of course," shared Fanny Navarro, special projects administrator for PROS. "Sue is a powerful, brilliant and compassionate woman leader in her field of bike safety, health with fitness through cycling."

"She rides herself, making her a true role model and her work is seamless from community to community. Bike Sue, as I fondly call her, has elevated Bike305 as a movement yearround. When you think cycling in our County, you think of Bike Sue,” Navarro concluded.

The role also allows Sue to engage in future planning. "I'm also able to contribute ideas and recommendations to our transportation agencies for building safer roadways and trails for cyclists of all ages," Sue added.

"It’s rewarding to know I am giving back and helping put others on the path to health and happiness."
