Tax Collector supports Hurricane Ian victims

On September 28, 2022 Hurricane Ian caused devastating damage to coastal areas of Lee and Charlotte counties on the west coast of South Florida. In an effort to assist Tax Collector staff who sustained hardship and unforeseen expenses in these communities, a collection fund was created to assist those most affected.

“I have known the Tax Collectors for several of the west coast counties for a number of years including those from Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Pinellas, Pasco Counties and prior to the storm making landfall, there was uncertainty about where Ian would actually head. Many of these Tax Collectors were already talking to each other pledging assistance and support, which was just great. Of course, we in Miami-Dade County Office of the Tax Collector, wanted to be part of the fraternity and so we thought the best thing we could do was to create a fund to benefit our counterpart employees in hard-hit counties, who need help the most,” said Miami Dade County Tax Collector Director Peter Cam.

The opportunity to donate was extended to taxpayers visiting the downtown Miami public service office resulting in a total of $2,654 raised for distribution among Tax Collector staff in need of assistance. Miami-Dade County Tax Collector has submitted a check to the Florida Tax Collector Association for distribution of funds to those employees.
