Taxicab License
The Miami-Dade County Taxicab For-Hire License system is a medallion system which deems a taxicab for-hire license to be intangible property. The owner of a taxicab medallion can use the medallion as collateral to secure a loan from a bank or other financial institution.

How to apply
New Taxicab For-Hire Licenses are issued through a lottery or auction process only after approval by the Board of County Commissioners.
Fees
Cash is not be accepted. Fees can be paid by check, money order or cashier's check made payable to the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works. If renewing in person, the renewal fee can be paid by credit card (Mastercard, Visa or American Express).
Expiration
Licenses are valid for one year. The Taxicab For-Hire License cycle runs from February 1 to January 31 of the following year. License renewal forms are mailed to operators a minimum of 60 days prior to the expiration of the licenses.
Additional business requirements
Taxicabs must obtain valid inspection and operating permit decals from the Vehicle Inspection Station prior to starting operations. Chauffeurs must obtain a valid chauffeur's registration. Decorative/advertising decals or complete wrapping of one or more windows are prohibited on vehicles regulated under the various for-hire and where other transportation-related ordinances under its purview is prohibited.

Vehicle Inspections
An original, signed Vehicle Operating Permit Application must be presented at vehicle inspection.
All Vehicle Operating Permit Applications signed by individuals other than the Permit/Certificate holder must have an active power of attorney on file with the Passenger Transportation Regulatory Division. An original, completed For-Hire Vehicle Inspection Station form must be presented at vehicle inspection.
Vehicles are inspected for compliance with specific vehicle standards contained in the Code. These include, but are not limited to, brakes, tires, headlights, turn signals, horn, brake lights, cleanliness, and other safety and cosmetic components.
Decorative/advertising decals or complete wrapping of one or more windows are prohibited on vehicles regulated under the various for-hire and other transportation-related ordinances. Vehicles are scheduled for annual, semi-annual or quarterly inspection according to vehicle age as outlined in the various transportation ordinances, or as a result of citations issued by field enforcement personnel.
A vehicle which does not pass the inspection as a result of a safety deficiency will not be allowed to conduct for-hire operations until the deficiency has been corrected and the vehicle passes a re-inspection.
Vehicle Inspection Fees
- New Vehicle Inspection $70.00
- Quarterly, Semi-Annual or Annual Vehicle Inspection, as applicable (all categories) $38.00
- Vehicle Re-inspection (safety) $35.00
- Vehicle Re-inspection (non-safety) $20.00
- Replacement of Decal* $35.00
*There is a replacement fee for lost, stolen or destroyed operating permits or decals.
A notarized Lost/Stolen or Destroyed Permit/Inspection Decal Affidavit with applicable fees must be presented at vehicle inspection.
Payment
Inspection fees are payable at the time of inspection or re-inspection and must be via check, credit card or money order. Cash payments are not accepted.
