Lean Six Sigma
Lean Six Sigma classes are open to all Miami-Dade employees. Although there are no formal education or experience prerequisites, it may be beneficial that students have a basic knowledge of introductory statistical concepts, Microsoft Excel, and at least 3-5 years of professional work experience to understand the Lean Six Sigma data-driven approach to problem-solving.
For virtual classes using Microsoft Teams, all students must have access to a computer logged in to the Miami-Dade network, a functional microphone, and a web camera. Using only a mobile phone for virtual classes is not recommended since the presentation and in-class exercises will require a computer.
Several progressive levels of Lean Six Sigma training are available to Miami-Dade County employees:
- Basic Yellow Belt certification consists of a one-day training workshop. This level is open to anyone interested in learning about Lean Six Sigma principles. Basic knowledge of some statistical concepts is recommended for understanding the data-driven approach in Lean Six Sigma.
- Orange Belt and Blue Belt certifications are offered to existing Yellow Belts to help increase their skills.
- Green Belt training is provided by an external resource for selected employees. Employees must have approval from their Department Director. Some professional experience and a basic understanding of statistical concepts are recommended. This level focuses on applying Lean Six Sigma methodologies to improve processes.
- Black Belt training is provided by an external resource for selected employees. Employees must have approval from their Department Director. It typically requires significant work experience and prior Green Belt certification. Black Belt curriculum uses advanced statistical concepts and requires a working level of proficiency in spreadsheet and/or statistical analysis programs (i.e., MS Excel or Minitab). Post-black belt work may involve leading complex improvement projects and mentoring Green Belts.
- Special Certification in Lean techniques is also available within the Orange Belt and Blue Belt curriculum. This is a more focused training program.
