Miami-Dade Parks celebrates Women's History Month

Miami-Dade County's parks system began in 1929. Miami Dade County’s women supported the principles of the women’s rights movement: to advance equity and improve the human condition for people of all genders, and one of the ways they did this was through their support of parks: the place where everyone comes together as equals.
Capture their legacy through the Women’s Park, the first park in the nation dedicated to women, and which stands in recognition of the contributions of diverse women to improving our residents’ quality of life. The Women’s Park is home to the Roxcy Bolton Community Center, named after an early leader of the women’s movement in Florida and nationwide, and who made significant contributions to women’s health and safety in her hometown of Miami-Dade County.
The Women's Park
One of the first parks in the nation to be dedicated to women, The Women's Park stands in recognition of the diverse contributions women made to improve the quality of life in Miami-Dade County. This 15-acre lakeside park offers a walking path to visitors, the Leona Ferguson Cooper playground for children, the Roxcy O'Neal Bolton Women's History Gallery with displays on prominent women in history, a picnic pavilion and the Gates and Fences Project by Miami artist Lydia Rubio. The Gates and Fences Project, completed in partnership with Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs' Arts and Public Places program, exemplifies the strength and power of women and recognizes their contributions in making our community a better place to live. The Women's Park is also home to our renowned famous all Girls Empowerment and Mentoring (G.E.M.) Summer Arts Camp and hosts events and activities throughout the year that encourage dialogue and discussion around topics central to women.
The most prominent and historically significant feature at the park is a time capsule, buried beneath a large rock of native oolitic limestone. A bronze plaque honoring the park’s founders and the anniversary of women’s right to vote is inscribed on top. The time capsule contains hundreds of items celebrating the work and accomplishments of the women of Miami-Dade County and beyond. The time capsule was buried in Dec. 1992 as part of the official dedication ceremony of The Women’s Park. It will be opened in 2022, on the 102nd anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, when women achieved the right to vote.
The Women's Park is located at 10251 West Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33172.
