Miami-Dade County communities have a tool to protect children with the RedSpeed Photo Enforcement System, which provides automated enforcement of school zones when children are present. The system offers a simple, effective and inexpensive way to protect students and help reduce accidents.

The implementation supports the county’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2040.

Where and when?
RedSpeed detection cameras are being installed at 206 school zones across unincorporated Miami-Dade County during the 2024-25 school year, with the first set of cameras were activated on Nov. 4, 2024.

The first cameras are being installed in the following school zones:

  • Goulds Elementary School
  • Hammocks Middle School
  • Madie Ives K-8 Center
  • Redland Middle School
  • Devon Aire K-8 Center
  • Highland Oaks Middle School
  • E.W.F. Stirrup Elementary School
  • Ruben Dario Middle School
  • American Senior High School
  • Charles R Drew K-8 Center
  • Robert Russa Moton Elementary School

What you should know

There was  a probation and awareness period during the first 30 days of the program which ended on Dec. 4, 2024. During the probation period, a warning was issued to drivers speeding 10 miles per hour or more above the speed limit on designated school zones.

Now that the probation period is over, drivers speeding 10 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit on school zones will receive a $100 citation in the mail. Citations include payment and processing information. The enforcement system is expected to decrease accidents, enhance public health, and improve road safety by reducing speeding in school zones.

NOTE: The camera enforcement system will be active during the entirety of the school day session.

Enforcement during reduced speed hours

  • The reduced speed hours (15 MPH speed limit), begin 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after the start of a regularly scheduled school session.
  • The reduced speed hours (15 MPH speed limit), begin 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after the conclusion of a regularly scheduled school session.

Enforcement outside of reduced speed hours

  • During school hours, not part of the reduced speed hours, enforcement will take place, but only when violations are over 10 MPH over the normal speed zone in the area.
  • Timeframes vary from school to school.

Some schools that participate in the Breakfast Program may have an earlier start time. For example, a school having a school day consisting of hours starting at 7:30 am and ending at 2:30 pm would have the speeding violations issued as follows:

How the funds will be used
The County will retain $60 to administer speed detection systems in school zones and other public safety initiatives and will remit $40 to entities as follows: $20 to the Department of Revenue for deposit into the General Revenue Fund; $12 to the School District for school security initiatives, student transportation, or safety of student walking conditions; $5 to the County or municipality for the School Guard Recruitment and Retention Program; and $3 to the Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Standards and Training Trust Fund.
