Summer of wins: Department of Transportation and Public Works celebrates multiple national honors

The Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is proud to announce that several of its projects, team members, and organizational initiatives have recently been recognized with major national and state-level awards. These honors highlight the dedication of DTPW’s team and its ongoing commitment to delivering innovative transportation and public works solutions that serve the Miami-Dade community with excellence. 

At the recent Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) National Conference in Washington, D.C., DTPW’s 20-mile South Dade TransitWay was named Project of the Year. Founded in 1971, COMTO is a national organization that advances leadership and opportunities in the transportation industry, and its recognition highlights the TransitWay’s impact as the nation’s longest all-electric Bus Rapid Transit corridor. Serving communities throughout southern Miami-Dade County, the TransitWay was honored for its innovative design, advanced safety technology, sustainability achievements and improvements to mobility and regional connectivity.

COMTO Miami was also recognized as Chapter of the Year and received the Harold B. Williams Award for Best Membership Recruitment and Retention Activities. In addition, DTPW Assistant Director Melissa Rolle-Scott received the Gerald Anderson Member of the Year Award for her leadership, dedication, and longstanding contributions to the organization.

The impact of the South Dade TransitWay has been honored with awards from multiple organizations. The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) recognized the TransitWay as the 2026 Florida Region Project of the Year in the Transportation – Structures category. The project also earned the Envision Gold designation from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, highlighting its commitment to long-term environmental, social, and economic value. Most recently, Engineering News-Record (ENR) named the South Dade TransitWay the 2026 Southeast Best Project for Excellence in Sustainability.

DTPW continues to earn recognition for excellence across its transit operations. The Florida Public Transportation Association (FPTA) named Metrobus Operator José M. Robledo its Tier 1 Operator of the Year for his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to public service.

The Department also received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its FY 2024 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, recognizing its high standards in transparency and financial reporting. This is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government organization and its management.
