Raising awareness on safe Lithium-Ion battery charging during Fire Prevention week

Observed Oct. 4-10, this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign: Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower, highlights simple steps to safely recharge lithium-ion powered devices and help prevent fires and injuries.

Lithium-ion batteries are generally safe when used properly but can catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or poorly made. Fire safety starts every time we charge a device. Individuals and families are encouraged to use the charger and cord provided with the device or one approved by the manufacturer, and to charge devices on a hard, flat surface.

Additionally, stop using devices that become very hot, swell, smoke or smell unusual. All devices should be unplugged when fully charged to help prevent overheating.

Keep in mind to also charge larger devices, such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outdoors and away from exits. When traveling by plane, keep devices in sight while charging. Never charge them in overhead compartments or charge e-cigarettes or vapes.
