Numbers

In most cases, spell out zero through nine, and use numbers for 10 and above. The same rule applies to ordinals: First through ninth, 10th and above.

Always use numbers for:

  • Ages: A 3-year-old dog, the house is 5 years old
  • Annual Events: 12th annual event, The 5th Annual MSABC Golf Tournament
  • Measurements: He is 6 feet, 2 inches tall, rain fell 8 inches
  • Money: $2 billion, 5 cents
  • Percentages: 5 percent, 40 percent (but spell out zero percent)
  • Political Districts: 6th Precinct, 2nd Congressional District
  • Rank: Miami-Dade was ranked No. 1
  • Speeds: 5 mph, winds of 5 to 10 mph
  • Temperatures: It was 5 degrees below zero

Spell out:

  • Branded or Commonly Used Names: Fab Four, sweet sixteen, Ten Commandments, high-five
  • Fractions: Two-thirds, four-fifths
  • Numbers that Begin a Sentence (Except for Specific Years): Thirty days is a long time to wait, 2018 was a very good year

Number Ranges: Use a hyphen (with no space before or after) for all number ranges: He was 20-30 minutes late. This also applies to date ranges and time ranges: 3 p.m.-4 p.m., Jan. 9-12. There is an exception for dates with different months and times that use noon or midnight. In those cases, use "to": Jan. 9 to Feb. 12, 8 a.m. to noon.

Roman Numerals: Use Roman numerals for wars, popes, kings, and legislative acts: World War II, King Henry VIII, Florida Statute Title IX. Otherwise, don't use them. A Super Bowl should be identified by year: 1973 Super Bowl.
