Holidays are made brighter in Miami-Dade with additional funding to help low-income households pay water and sewer bills

This holiday season, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is pleased to announce that an additional 11,370 Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department customers have received federal Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) funds to assist them to pay for their water and sewer utility bills.

The Department received an additional $7.5 million of the $55 million awarded to the State of Florida through the federal program. This latest round of recipients was based on individuals who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through the United States Department of Agriculture. To date, 16,339 Water and Sewer customers have now received more than $19.1 million in financial relief.

“These funds are a blessing to thousands of families in our county that are struggling to make ends meet,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “To have this latest round of recipients be announced at this time of year has even greater impact and should make the holiday season brighter for those who need it the most.” 

LIHWAP, a federally funded program managed in Florida by Florida Commerce, is a first-come, first-served program that provides much-needed relief to low-income families who spend a high proportion of their household income on water utility services. Florida Commerce has partnered with local Community Action Agencies throughout the State and Promise, a technology company, to distribute the funds. 

“Our Department will continue to partner with agencies and investigate opportunities where we can secure financial assistance on behalf of our neighbors who need it the most,” said Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department Director Roy Coley. “The financial relief these allocations provide will ensure equitable access to this vital resource.”
