Miami-Dade County cuts the ribbon on phase 2 of The Underline project

MIAMI-DADE ( April 24, 2024 )–

This morning, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation of Public Works (DTPW), joined Friends of The Underline to cut the ribbon on the second phase of The Underline,  at Vizcaya Metrorail Station.

“Reimagining the underutilized land beneath Miami-Dade’s Metrorail tracks serves a shining example of collaboration and innovative urban design,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “It showcases the County’s dedication to building a more accessible and pedestrian-friendly environment that is also beautiful, functional, safe and engaging, which enhances the overall quality of life for all residents.”

The Underline is a unique 10-mile multimodal corridor that will not only improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety but also enhance connectivity and provide easy access to eight Metrorail stations, the University of Miami, 24 schools, two hospitals, four malls and more than 10,000 businesses from Brickell to Dadeland South Metrorail Station.

"As a proud pedestrian, transit rider, and lover of green spaces, the completion of Phase 2 of the Underline represents a significant milestone in the County's steadfast commitment to vibrant, accessible transit-oriented communities," said District 5 County Commissioner Eileen Higgins. "The Underline linear park will strengthen neighborhood connectivity and make it easier and safer for residents to walk or bike to Metrorail stops. The Underline provides us with a greenway that facilitates a healthier lifestyle and encourages vital social interaction. This is a great step forward – but we aren’t done yet. I can't wait to see all 10 miles of The Underline complete!”

The Underline Phase 2 is a 2.14-mile segment that connects SW 13 St to SW 19 Ave. This phase provides separated pedestrian and bicycle paths, improvements to intersections, access to public transportation, public Wi-Fi, enhanced lighting, and wayfinding. This expansion links the amenity-rich Phase 1, Brickell Backyard with the historic Roads, Shenandoah, and Silver Bluff neighborhoods in the City of Miami.

“The Underline is not just a cool amenity. It’s a way to connect communities to each other in all these special neighborhoods you can’t really appreciate from a car,” said District 7 Commissioner Raquel Regalado. “By bringing this mobility-focused linear park to the people of Miami-Dade, we’re putting the magic of exploration and nature back into our urban core.”

“The completion of Phase 2 of The Underline represents a milestone in our ongoing efforts to significantly improve mobility and connectivity across Miami-Dade County,” said DTPW Director and CEO Eulois Cleckley. “We are thrilled to see the positive impact it will have on our communities. By creating accessible green spaces and improving pedestrian and bicycle pathways, The Underline will bring more people into our public transportation system. DTPW looks forward to continuing our work to create sustainable, inclusive spaces that benefit everyone in our county and to be the world’s best provider of transportation options.”

Phase 3 of The Underline, now under construction, is a 7.36-mile segment that will connect Phase 2 to Dadeland South Metrorail Station and provide 12 amenity areas and 24 microforests. The entire segment links various communities including City of Miami, Coral Gables, South Miami, and Unincorporated Miami-Dade County. Once all three phases are completed, The Underline is projected to serve more than 100,000 residents within a 10-minute walk, improving access to public transportation at the University of Miami, 24 schools, two hospitals, four malls and more than 10,000 businesses. Phase 3 is expected to be completed in 2026.

"Friends of The Underline is a non-profit organization partnering with Miami-Dade County to create a first-class multi-modal corridor and 120-acre park of which we can all be proud for generations,” said Meg Daly, founder, and CEO of Friends of The Underline. “Working together, we are transforming regional mobility, resilience, public health, connectivity, and community.  As we grow our positive impact with a shared vision and trust, we are creating the model for public-private partnerships for parks around the world."
