Coconut Grove Metrorail Station temporarily closing for substantial improvements and modernization
In order to enhance the rider experience for Metrorail commuters and modernize infrastructure, the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is temporarily closing the Coconut Grove Metrorail Station beginning on January 21, 2025, for approximately four months to expedite and complete much needed renovations. Alternative bus shuttle options will also be implemented, among other interim solutions. The station is expected to reopen in the spring of 2025.
“The Coconut Grove Station is an essential hub for our community, connecting residents and visitors to key destinations,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “These renovations will not only improve the station’s functionality but also make it safer and more welcoming for everyone. The temporary rerouting to shuttle buses will pay off as we gain major long lasting improvements that will provide a better experience for all riders.”
This project is part of the broader Grove Central development, a transit-oriented community initiative designed to improve connectivity and accessibility for the Coconut Grove community and surrounding areas. Several station improvements have already been completed, and this next phase will bring the project closer to its full potential.
The stations enhancements include:
- Installation of brand-new elevators and escalator.
- Completely remodeled restrooms, including new stalls and water fountains.
- New, comfortable, modern granite benches.
- New waterproofed tiles on the ground and platform levels.
- New way-finding signage to guide riders through key areas, including the parking garage.
“These upgrades are about creating a better experience for our riders,” said DTPW’s Interim Director and CEO, Josiel Ferrer-Diaz. “We’re making the station safer, more accessible, and more comfortable for everyone who uses it. We are also doing this work through our development partner at a cost savings for taxpayers as our partner takes on the project and related costs. Thank you for your patience as we work to deliver a station that meets the needs of our growing community.”
During the renovations, Metrorail trains will not stop at the station. To ensure minimal disruption during the closure, DTPW will provide a FREE bus shuttle service between Douglas Road and Coconut Grove Metrorail stations. Throughout the closure, parking for transit riders will be moved to level P2 of Grove Central’s garage.
GRP Grove Metro Station LLC, the tenant responsible for developing the Grove Central transit-oriented project, was awarded an economic development lease to create a mixed-use development at the Coconut Grove Metrorail Station. GRP has contributed $6.1 million toward the cost of the station’s renovations.
