Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis Champions “Families on the Fly” Program to Support Families Traveling Through MIA
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis sponsored legislation urging the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to implement the “Families on the Fly” program at Miami International Airport (MIA) — an initiative designed to make air travel less stressful for parents and children.
“As a mother of two young children, I understand firsthand the challenges families face when traveling,” said Commissioner Milian Orbis. “Managing strollers, diaper bags, and ensuring children remain calm can quickly become overwhelming; often leading to delays that affect other travelers as well.”
- The “Families on the Fly” initiative, launched by DHS, is designed to ease that burden by providing dedicated TSA screening lanes and discounted TSA PreCheck fees for families. It’s currently being piloted in select airports, including Charleston (CHS), Jacksonville (JAX), Rhode Island T.F. Green (PVD), Luis Muñoz Marín (SJU), and Tampa International (TPA).
Commissioner Milian Orbis’s resolution calls for Miami International Airport — known as the Gateway of the Americas — to be next in line for the program.
“MIA is one of the busiest international airports in the country, welcoming families from all over the world,” added Commissioner Milian Orbis. “Implementing this program will not only make travel more compassionate and efficient for parents and children, but it will also help streamline the process for everyone. I fully support our Miami-Dade County families, and this is one more way we can make their journeys a little smoother.”
