Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners to Discuss Filling District 5 Vacancy
The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners will discuss options for filling the vacancy in Commission District 5 during its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
The vacancy follows the resignation of Commissioner Eileen Higgins, who qualified to run for mayor of the City of Miami. In accordance with County Code and established procedures, the Commission will consider the process of selecting a replacement to serve the remainder of the term for District 5.
“District 5 plays a vital role in the fabric of our county,” said Chairman Anthony Rodriguez. “It’s important that residents and businesses in every community continue to have a voice in the decisions that shape Miami-Dade’s future.”
To maintain representation for District 5, Chairman Rodriguez has requested that the Commission Auditor prepare for the potential appointment process, through which interested District 5 residents could apply for consideration.
The official web portal is now live for individuals who wish to submit their names for consideration. The portal provides a convenient and secure way for eligible residents to express interest and upload the necessary documentation for review. Interested individuals may apply at: www.miamidade.gov/commission/auditor. The application portal will remain open until noon on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
A special election remains an option for filling the vacancy. The Board’s discussion will include consideration of both an appointment process and a special election, as well as the timelines, costs, and implications associated with each.
The discussion will take place during the Commission’s November 18 meeting.
