          MIAMI-DADE ( February 07, 2026 )–

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has issued a Water Shortage Warning for multiple counties across South Florida, including Miami-Dade County. While the warning does not impose mandatory restrictions at this time, SFWMD has cautioned that additional measures could be implemented if conditions worsen.

The warning is due to ongoing drought conditions and increased water use, which have contributed to lower water levels in the Biscayne Aquifer, the County’s primary water source.

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) continues to deliver its essential services to 2.8 million people each day without interruptions. The department is closely monitoring system operations and water levels across its well fields and treatment plants.

As a proactive measure, WASD is joining SFWMD in encouraging customers to voluntarily reduce non-essential water use to help protect the long-term sustainability of the water supply. Water is life, and conservation today helps safeguard our water resources for the future.

The Biscayne Aquifer provides drinking water to millions of residents across Miami-Dade County. By reducing non-essential water consumption systemwide, residents can help stabilize aquifer levels and support regional water conservation efforts during this dry period.

          How you can help:

          • Please consider skipping your scheduled lawn irrigation days until the warning is lifted – watering your lawn is one of the most water-intensive activities for homeowners. You can spot water areas of your lawn or landscaping to offset die-off.
          • Also consider avoiding washing cars/boats or filling pools during this period to minimize water usage.
          • When using the dishwasher or washing machine, please run full loads to maximize usage of the water.
          • Consider changing the times you use water at your home. Peak water usage typically occurs in the early morning and evening, when the greatest strain is placed on water treatment plants.
          • Take advantage of Miami-Dade County rebates of up to $200 for the purchase of high-efficiency toilets, faucets, and showerheads. Using these fixtures can save water and help lower your water bills.
          • Perform a water audit of all interior and exterior household fixtures for leaks.

SFWMD and WASD will continue to closely monitor water usage trends and aquifer levels to determine if additional measures need to be implemented. The public will be kept informed as to further updates.

For more information on water conservation tips, residents can visit the WASD website.
