Commissioner Milian Orbis Proposal Would Eliminate Over 120,000 Property Tax Bills in Miami-Dade
A proposal sponsored by Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis would eliminate over 120,000 property tax bills across Miami-Dade County and reduce unnecessary government costs.
The measure would stop Miami-Dade County from generating and mailing property tax bills of thirty dollars or less and would prevent those small amounts from being extended onto the tax roll. The change reflects a simple principle: county government should not spend more to process a bill than it collects from the taxpayer.
“Across our country, there is a growing demand for property tax reform. Miami-Dade should not wait for Tallahassee to fix what we can fix right here at home. Eliminating tens of thousands of wasteful property tax bills is a simple step toward smarter government and greater respect for taxpayers,” said Commissioner Milian Orbis.
“Right now Miami-Dade sends more than 120,000 property tax bills that together generate only about sixty thousand dollars in revenue. Eliminating those bills will save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars every year and millions over time. That is exactly the kind of waste I want to eliminate.”
The proposal was recommended to the Board of County Commissioners by Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez, whose office administers the collection of property taxes in Miami-Dade County. Under Florida law, the Tax Collector must bring this recommendation to the County Commission, but the Board must approve the change before it can take effect. In a letter to the Commission, the Tax Collector noted that processing extremely small property tax bills creates unnecessary administrative costs and can contribute to avoidable tax deed complications.
“Good government means constantly reviewing how we operate and asking whether the system still makes sense. I appreciate Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez for bringing this idea forward. This is a simple reform that cuts unnecessary bureaucracy and shows Miami-Dade is serious about modernizing the way county government works.”
If approved, the measure would reduce administrative waste, eliminate confusion for residents who receive very small property tax bills, and demonstrate that Miami-Dade County is taking practical steps to modernize government operations while respecting taxpayer dollars.
