Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee to Unveil Richmond Heights Historic Marker Honoring a Legacy of Vision and Resilience

Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee, in partnership with the Dade Heritage Trust and The Historic Society, will host the Richmond Heights Historic Marker Installation on Wednesday, April 15 at 11:30 a.m. at 14520 Monroe St, Miami, FL 33176.

The event celebrates the extraordinary legacy of Richmond Heights, one of the first planned African American communities in the United States, built on vision, determination, and opportunity for African American World War II veterans.

This historic recognition also highlights the key contributions of Jessica Garrett Modkins, whose leadership through The Historic Society has helped preserve and elevate the story of Richmond Heights for future generations.

Born out of post-war vision and perseverance, Richmond Heights was developed after World War II when Captain Frank Crawford Martin envisioned a community for African American veterans despite significant racial and financial barriers. His determination, supported through federal intervention under President Harry S. Truman, led to the creation of a thriving, purpose-built neighborhood.

From its first 26 pioneering families in 1949 to a fully built community of 457 homes by 1951, Richmond Heights stands today as a living testament to resilience, unity, and historic achievement.
