Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Holding Cuba’s Regime Accountable
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis is applauding today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing ExxonMobil to continue pursuing compensation for property confiscated by Cuba’s communist regime, under the Helms-Burton Act.
“This is a major victory for justice and accountability,” said Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis. “For more than six decades, the Cuban dictatorship has benefited from property it never had the right to take. Families and businesses who lost everything have waited generations to see even a measure of accountability.
This ruling will not undo the harm caused by decades of confiscation, but it sends an unmistakable message that the pursuit of justice does not expire. For too long, the Cuban regime and the entities it controls have operated as though there would never be consequences for stealing and profiting from the property of others. Today’s decision establishes an important precedent and brings victims one step closer to obtaining the justice and restitution they have been denied for generations.”
