Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30.
Know Your Risk
- Storm Surge Zones: Determine if your home is in a storm surge planning zone
- Flood-Prone Areas: Check if your property is in a flood-prone area using FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center
Prepare Your Home
- Secure Windows and Doors: Install hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows. Ensure all doors have at least three hinges and a deadbolt lock
- Roof Inspection: Have a licensed professional inspect your roof for loose tiles or shingles and reinforce as necessary
- Landscaping: Trim trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of branches causing damage. Dispose of yard waste promptly
Assemble an Emergency Kit
Prepare a disaster supply kit that includes:
- Water: At least one gallon per person per day for at least three days
- Food: A three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Medications: A seven-day supply of prescription and non-prescription medications
- Personal hygiene items: Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties
- Important documents: Copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account records stored in a waterproof container
- Cash: Small denominations
- Emergency contact information
Pet Preparedness
- Pet-Friendly Shelters: Identify pet-friendly shelters in advance
- Pet Emergency Kit: Include food, water, medications, leash, collar with ID and vaccination records
- Microchipping: Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up to date
Evacuation Planning
- Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes
- Transportation: Plan for transportation needs, especially if you do not own a vehicle
- Shelter Locations: Know the locations of nearby shelters
- Special Needs Registry: If you or a family member has special needs, register with the Emergency & Evacuation Assistance Program (EEAP)
