What Happens After an Arrest

If your family member or loved one has recently been arrested and is being processed through Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation (MDCR), you likely have questions about what happens next. This page provides basic information about the booking process, release timelines, and how you can assist your loved one.

The Booking Process
After an arrest, individuals are transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) for processing. During the booking process, staff will:
- Verify identity and personal information
- Take fingerprints and photographs
- Complete medical and mental health screening
- Inventory and store personal property
- Enter charges into the system
- Determine housing and classification
- Bond information will be set when applicable
The booking process may take several hours, depending on intake volume and individual circumstances.
How to Bond Your Family Member Out
If your loved one is eligible for release on bond, you may post bond in one of the following ways:
Cash Bond
- Full bond amount is paid directly in person via Touch-Pay at the facility.
Surety Bond
- A licensed bail bond agent posts the bond for a fee.

Before posting bond, you should confirm:
- The individual’s identification, including Full Name and Jail number
- The bond amount
- Eligibility for release
Bond information may not be available immediately after arrest, while booking is still in progress.
How Long Until They Are Released?
Release times vary depending on several factors, including:
- Completion of the booking process
- Court processing requirements
- Time required to process payment
- Release scheduling
Even after bond is posted or the charge(s) is satisfied in court, release may take several hours to complete depending on several factors.
Additional Information
It is normal to feel worried or uncertain when a loved one is arrested. MDCR staff work to ensure individuals are processed safely and efficiently. Additionally, loved ones have access to free phone calls throughout the booking process. Once the release process is completed, inmates will be released in front of TGK near the “Inmate Release Area” signage.
