Retirees

You are eligible to continue coverage under the Retiree Group if you retire from Miami-Dade County in good standing, under disability and meet eligibility criteria on the Retiree Handbook found under Resources & Forms below. 

Coverage continuation is not automatic. Your employee group coverage is cancelled on the last day of the pay period in which the retirement date falls and for which the employee experiences a regular insurance deduction or made direct payments to the Benefits Division (if on unpaid leave of absence). Coverage under the Retiree Group will not be activated until the first retiree premium is received (within thirty days of your retirement date). The insurance carriers will be notified to reinstate your coverage under the Retiree Group upon receipt of your initial premium payment.

The same election process applies to employees on leave of absence (or no-pay status) who terminate County employment in good standing or under disability status, without physically returning to work. Group insurance coverage will end the last day of the pay period in which you retire, assuming premiums were paid through that date. 

If coverage is cancelled for nonpayment of premiums, while on leave status, you will not have the opportunity to continue coverage under the Retiree Group or COBRA.
