Lt. Firefighter honored for supporting lung cancer research nationwide

Lt. Harrington
Miami-Dade Firefighter featured on the cover of 2022 American Lung Association Firefighter Calendar is honored for her fundraising efforts supporting lung cancer research nationwide.

Firefighters work every day to safeguard our communities. Whether responding to fires, traffic accidents, medical incidents or other types of emergencies, these local heroes gear up with courage and sacrifice and make a commitment to serve every day, protecting life and property along the way.

Meet Lt. Jeanette Harrington from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) who is saving lives in more ways than one. Lt. Harrington is being recognized by the American Lung Association for being the highest fundraising firefighter in the nation in support of lung cancer research. This recognition has earned her the cover of the recently released 2022 Fight For Air Climb Firefighter Calendar.

More than 40 cities nationwide take part in the Fight For Air Climb every year, where thousands of firefighters race up hundreds of stairs in full firefighter gear weighing over 40 pounds. MDFR Lt. Jeanette Harrington is one of our local heroes who donate their time to fundraise. She has participated in the Miami Fight For Air Climb over the last seven years, and has raised close to $40,000 for the American Lung Association, making her the top fundraiser across the nation.

“It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to contribute in the quest of finding a cure for lung disease,” said Lt. Jeanette Harrington. “Just like I have done, many other first responders participate each year with the same hope to help others who are suffering or have lost their lives to lung disease. This is more than a good cause; this is personal for me.”

Respiratory diseases remain a significant health issue for firefighters and emergency responders. “Our department is very proud of Lt. Harrington for receiving this distinguished recognition,” said MDFR Fire Chief Alan Cominsky. “Lt. Harrington represents the many brave men and women in the fire service who continuously go above and beyond their call of duty to save others. It’s comforting to know that heroes across our nation contribute to this great cause.”

Lt. Jeanette Harrington has had a remarkable career throughout her 19 years of service with MDFR and has been a longtime supporter of the American Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research.
