Helping people on all walks of life

Sonia Grice is Director of the Miami-Dade Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD). She brings an incredible commitment to support under-served individuals and families facing life-altering challenges in our community.

Grice is a skilled social worker whose influence impacted several local programs. After witnessing how people with AIDS and drug addictions were shunned, she was inspired to become an advocate. Grice works tirelessly to help make things better for these people. Witnessing someone transition from a life-limiting illness towards recovery and a normal happy life makes her job rewarding.

Through the years, she has helped those experiencing homelessness, substance abuse and life-threatening illnesses. Grice understands everyone faces difficult choices. “Decisions don’t always work out as planned but a poor choice should not define you or prevent you from getting needed help,” she said. Seeing someone succeed despite their difficulties is the most satisfying aspect of her work.

Her upbringing in a Christian household instills values of empathy and generosity. She believes that as humans and community members, we exist to support one another and encourage each other to make positive choices.

Social work requires nerves of steel and is not a job for the faint of heart. It has made Grice stronger and thankful. She had great mentors to guide her throughout her career and wants to extend the same support to others. She is available to support her team when they feel burned out or need help with their own problems. Grice also wants to help younger employees reach their goals.

Among other social services, Community Action & Human Services Department (CAHSD) helps people with rent, water and food assistance. Facing a crisis, like an eviction notice, requires immediate attention. The Department can help people relocate to a new place and pay the security deposit.

CAHSD has 13 community resource centers around the County where individuals and families can get services from workforce training and assistance to free tax filing. The department works to ensure that all citizens can feel comfortable and secure in their homes with home renovation and weatherization. It also provides residential and outpatient rehabilitative services and domestic violence intervention. You can learn more about available services on CASHD’s website or call 786-469-4600.
