Miami-Dade County honored with inaugural AI 50 award by Center for Public Sector AI

Miami-Dade County has been nationally recognized by the Center for Public Sector AI with the inaugural AI 50 award for its countywide approach in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) focused on protecting resident privacy, ensuring government security and promoting ethical decision-making.

Led by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Information Technology Department (ITD), the County assembled cross-departmental workgroups to design and implement a unified AI strategy. This strategic, inclusive approach brought together diverse professionals who emphasized core values, such as ethics, transparency, security, collaboration, data privacy and continuous evaluation to ensure AI is deployed to benefit both the workforce and the community.

"We’re leveraging AI to enhance public services, empower our workforce to streamline operations reflecting responsible fiscal stewardship. These efforts prioritize the evolving needs of our residents and support the success of our small businesses. As we move forward, our focus on AI remains to increase government efficiency through WISE investments in technology."

The County’s AI governance model is structured around seven specialized workgroups responsible for key focus areas:

1. AI Executive Steering Workgroup
2. Policies and Guidelines
3. Workforce Development and Training
4. Innovation and Use Case
5. Security and Risk Management
6. Technology and Governance
7. Procurement and Vendor Management

This collaborative effort reflects years of planning and contributions from County leadership, dedicated employees and external partners cultivating partnerships with academic institutions, industry leaders and other government entities to remain at the forefront of AI best practices and advancements to enhance government efficiency and invest in technology to improve access to services. 

"With strong governance, data privacy protections, community partnerships and continued collaboration, we’re creating an ethical, transparent and efficient AI ecosystem. Our cybersecurity office recognized the value of AI through its early implementation in areas that, conservatively, save at least 4,000 hours based on 2.5 years of analysis of Remedy tickets from our workforce," added ITD Interim Director Dr. Carladenise Edwards.

The AI 50 is a new recognition program from Government Technology’s Center for Public Sector AI highlighting organizations and individuals making significant contributions to AI adoption and advancement in public sector agencies.
