Office of Historic Preservation recognized with national award

Miami-Dade County Regulatory and Economic Resources Division recognized the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) for receiving the National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for their History Collaborative program.  Launched in 2023, the program’s mission is to advance the use of historic preservation to promote community resilience through engagement efforts to better understand and preserve the people, places and stories that shape Miami-Dade’s heritage.

In partnership with Miami-Dade Public Library System Digital Collections Department and HistoryMiami, the program combines traditional preservation tools with inclusive storytelling. Held in May during National Historic Preservation month, the initiative targets a specific community throughout Miami-Dade County for outreach, oral history sharing and cultural preservation.

The program provides an opportunity for residents to share personal stories, digitize historical materials and record oral histories through HistoryMiami’s mobile booth. These records are made publicly accessible online and capture and protect both the tangible and intangible elements of local heritage—ensuring that diverse community narratives are honored and preserved for future generations.
