Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management launches informative website on the proposed Sustainable Solid Waste Campus

The Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) announces the launch of a new website dedicated to the proposed Sustainable Solid Waste Campus (SSWC) initiative. This online resource provides residents with an in-depth look at a state-of-the-art waste management solution designed to safely, sustainably, and efficiently meet the County’s growing needs for generations to come.

The SSWC website offers comprehensive details on how the facility will integrate modern, zero-waste technologies to provide safe, environmentally responsible solutions for solid waste management in Miami-Dade. This digital platform also answers frequently asked questions, dispels common myths about waste-to-energy (WTE) technology, and shares examples about how modern waste-to-energy is used in communities worldwide including Europe and Japan as well as across the U.S. To access the website, please visit: miamidade.gov/sustainable-solid-waste

“This new website demonstrates our commitment to keeping the community informed and engaged throughout every phase of this project,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We want residents to stay informed and follow along as we develop a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the waste management needs of our community for decades to come. We encourage everyone to explore the site and remain engaged as we work toward creating a cleaner, greener future for Miami-Dade County.”

As Miami-Dade County produces more than five million tons of waste annually, developing resilient infrastructure is essential to managing this volume while minimizing the environmental impact. The SSWC will divert substantial amounts of waste from landfills, using cutting-edge waste-to-energy technology to convert solid waste into clean electricity. This will help reduce local greenhouse gas emissions, meet rigorous environmental standards, and generate enough electricity to power approximately 70,000 households.

The SSWC will integrate cutting-edge waste management technologies to reduce reliance on landfills and generate clean energy. Central to this initiative, the WTE facility will transform as much as 90 percent of waste into renewable energy, significantly offsetting greenhouse gas emissions and supplying power to the local grid, supporting the County’s sustainability objectives.

“Globally, countries such as Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France have pioneered WTE technology to handle waste sustainably, as have other cities locally and nationally. We will incorporate best practices from around the world to ensure our facility meets the highest standards for safety and efficiency, creating a system that will serve Miami-Dade’s future needs,” said DSWM Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD.

The Campus will also include facilities for advanced waste diversion, including organics processing, recycling, and biogas harvesting, bringing Miami-Dade closer to a zero-waste future. Designed with stringent environmental and safety standards, the facility will meet or exceed EPA air quality guidelines, with transparency provided through accessible emissions data — a model inspired by successful international, national and local systems.

Beyond environmental benefits, WTE provides Miami-Dade with an economically sustainable, long-term solution for waste disposal. This facility will create green jobs, promote fiscal responsibility, and help manage disposal costs as the County’s waste management needs grow.
