Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez Honors the Life and Legacy of Jose Marti with Community Celebrations Across District 5
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez (District 5) commemorated the life, legacy, and enduring influence of Jose Marti with two meaningful community celebrations across District 5, honoring the Cuban patriot, poet, and freedom fighter whose words and ideals continue to inspire generations.
On January 28th, Jose Marti’s birthday, Commissioner Lopez joined City of Miami Commissioners Ralph Rosado and Rolando Escalona at Versailles Restaurant for a special tribute that brought together community leaders, cultural performers, and residents to reflect on Martí’s profound contributions to liberty, justice, and civic responsibility. The gathering honored Marti’s lasting impact on Cuban and Cuban American identity and celebrated his role as a guiding voice for freedom throughout the Americas.
The following day, on January 29th, Commissioner Lopez continued the commemoration in the City of Miami Beach, joining County Commissioner Micky Steinberg, Miami Beach Commissioners Alex Fernandez, Tanya Bhatt, and Monica Matteo-Salinas, along with members of the community, the Miami Beach Senior Choir, and local performers, for a moving ceremony honoring Martí’s life and message.
“The sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering commitment to freedom are what define this community,” said Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez. “Jose Marti’s legacy reminds us that education, culture, and civic engagement are essential to preserving liberty. His message transcends borders and generations, belonging to all who believe in the power of ideas to shape a more just and hopeful future.”
Throughout both events, Commissioner Lopez emphasized Marti’s role as a moral compass for generations, noting how many in the community grew up reading his writings and learning values of integrity, compassion, and service. “These celebrations are a reflection of the pride, unity, and cultural richness that define District 5,” Lopez added.
Commissioner Lopez thanked her colleagues, community partners, performers, and organizers for bringing together residents across Miami and Miami Beach to celebrate Marti’s enduring legacy and to ensure that his message continues to inspire future generations.
