Metro Express Bus Rapid Transit Service

Metro Express, Miami-Dade County’s first-ever all-electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service, is coming soon to South Dade. This state-of-the-art system represents a major leap forward for public transportation, transforming how we move and enhancing connectivity throughout the community. Metro Express connects riders to jobs, schools, healthcare, and other essential services across South Dade.

With 14 brand-new stations stretching from Dadeland South Metrorail Station to Florida City, you’ll spend less time commuting and more time doing what you love.

The new air-conditioned BRT stations feature level boarding, real-time arrival displays, free Wi-Fi, bike storage, and more. Metro Express delivers a faster ride on all-electric, roomier buses equipped with charging ports, bike racks inside the bus, and easy boarding through all doors.

Developed as part of the SMART Program, Metro Express reflects Miami-Dade County’s long-term commitment to modern, sustainable infrastructure.

The South Dade TransitWay (South Corridor) is one of the six rapid transit corridors of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Program. The corridor runs 20-miles in length and connects numerous municipalities which represent some of the fastest growing communities in Miami-Dade County.

The South Dade TransitWay, formerly the Busway, extends from the Dadeland South Metrorail Station to the SW 344th Street Park-and-Ride/Transit Terminal, and it provides a mobility connection to various municipalities, job hubs, hospitals and schools from the South Miami and Dadeland area to the Village of Pinecrest, Village of Palmetto Bay, Town of Cutler Bay, City of Homestead, and Florida City.
- August 2018 – Bus Rapid Transit is selected as a preferred transportation option for South Corridor
- May 2020 - $100M federal funding approved
- February 2021 – Contractor begins design and construction
- June 2021 – Official groundbreaking
- September 2025 – Open for service
Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is building the South Dade TransitWay in partnership with the following agencies:
- Federal Transit Administration (FTA)
- Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)
- Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust (CITT)
- Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO)
The Design Build Contract Value is $368,233,493.42.

The following are the funding sources for this project:
- Federal funds: Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Capital Investment Grant Program - Small Starts: $100 million
- State funds committed to the project in the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) 5-year work program: $100 million
- Local funds committed to the project: $100 million*
*This project received an additional $29.5 million in American Recovery Plan Act funding in 2021 which will be applied towards the local match.
