Become a full-time bus operator

New applications will be accepted from Nov. 18 through Dec. 16, 2024.
Join Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) as a full-time bus operator. Bus operator trainees will earn $19.57 per hour, and after successfully completing the training program will earn $20.60 per hour to start, plus built-in overtime and an additional 1.5% allowance added to the Bus Operators’ base pay, and the option of earning double-time for working County-observed holidays.

Sign-On Bonus: $2,500 paid after acceptance, enrollment, and completion of the DTPW Bus Operator Training Program and six (6) months of successful performance; remaining $2,500 paid after 18 additional months of successful performance as a DTPW Bus Operator.

How to get hired

Step 1: The next application period runs from Nov. 18 through Dec. 16. 
Once the application period opens, visit miamidade.gov/jobs and search for the open “bus operator” position to apply.

Step 2: Get screened
If your application meets the qualifications, human resources will contact you to discuss next steps. The following are minimum requirements to become a bus operator for DTPW:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess proof of having passed the General Knowledge for a class “B” vehicle with air brakes and Passenger Endorsement Testing of the CDL (all documents need to be current and valid)
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and various shifts and locations as assigned.

We provide all traffic signals countywide, along with all traffic control signs, street signage and pavement markings and all County and State-owned street lights. We build, operate and maintain movable and fixed bridges, swales, roadway surface repairs, guardrails, and along County road rights-of-way. We also operate and maintain the Rickenbacker and Venetian Causeways.

We manage the County Stormwater Utility for flood and water quality protection and maintain the secondary canal system.

Permits for all work within rights-of-way and code enforcement of unpermitted work is also handled by our Public Works division.
